Leading structural monitoring specialists AVT have successfully completed a complex monitoring program for Farrans Construction during strengthening and refurbishment work on the spectacular and elegant Foyle Bridge in Northern Ireland.

The overall project has been managed and supervised by Hyder Engineering who have developed a ground-breaking and highly innovative technique for strengthening box girder bridges.

Duncan Stringfellow and Phil Bailey were two of the senior Hyder engineers responsible for interpreting the results during the jacking process and as they explain: “Our calculations of how the bridge was expected to perform were based on theoretical analysis and computer generated predictions for the structure. During the jacking procedure, we were totally reliant on the results from the AVT network of sensors to give us a three dimensional picture on what was actually happening. Huge jacking forces were being generated and we could see through the real-time graphs exactly how the bridge was reacting.”
